Software Installation Notes

ARRL Products · Product Notes

All of these suggestions are valid for all ARRL software, including TravelPlus, QSTView, ARRL Radio Designer, ARRL Handbook CD, and the ARRL Periodicals.

"Close all running applications" Error

This error message surprises many users because they have apparently closed all the running applications. What they haven't closed, however, is the background tasks that are causing the conflict. These background tasks need to be closed to let the installation proceed.

Windows 95

In Windows 95 it's easy to close all the tasks. Press the Ctrl, Alt and Delete keys once to bring up the task list. Click on the task you want to end and press the "End Task" button. Do this for everything in the list, except for Explorer and Systray.

Run the installation again.

Windows 3.1

This method is used for Windows 3.1 and 3.11, as well as Windows for Workgroups 3.1 and 3.11.

Move any icons in your Startup group to another group -- Accessories, for example. Edit the win.ini file; add a semicolon (";") to the beginning of the "load=" and "run=" statements.

Reboot your computer and run the installation again.

After installation is complete, move your startup items back into the Startup group and remove the semicolon from the win.ini statements.

Clearing the Windows "temp" Directory

When installing applications or running a program, "temp" files are often created. These files are typically automatically deleted when they are no longer needed. However, sometimes they aren't automatically deleted and can cause conflicts when trying to install new software.

The remedy is to manually clear out the "temp" directory by deleting all the files and directories present. Before deleting anything, be sure you close all the running applications.

In Windows 95/98, the "temp" directory is typically located in c:\windows\temp\. Windows 3.x users should refer to the tmp= and/or temp= lines in the config.sys to find their "temp" directory.

After Dark, by Berkeley Systems, Inc.

After Dark is known to cause a number of conflicts when installing applications. To keep After Dark from interfering, you need to completely disable it. To do this, you'll have to temporarily remove any references to it from the Startup Group, the win.ini and the autoexec.bat files.

Disabling After Dark in your Startup Group is as simple as dragging the icon to another program group/folder. To temporarily disable After Dark from your win.ini, place a semicolon (";") before the "load=" and/or "run=" statements. To temporarily disable After Dark from your autoexec.bat, place a remark statement ("REM") at the beginning of the path to After Dark.

Video Resolution

Resetting your video to a resolution of 640 x 480 pixels with 256 colors can allow programs to install on some systems. After the installation is successful, change back to your normal resolution.

Windows 95

To change your resolution in Windows 95 right-click on the Desktop and choose "Properties." Select the "Settings" tab and change your resolution and color depth there.

Windows 3.1

This method is used for Windows 3.1 and 3.11, as well as Windows for Workgroups 3.1 and 3.11.

In the Main group, open the Windows Setup tool. From the "Options" menu, choose "Change System Settings..." and change the resolution from there.
