Winston Churchill once said, "You make a living by what you get. You make a life by what you give." Every year across America, hundreds of radio amateurs give thousands of volunteer hours to seek out newcomers and teach them the standards and practices of the amateur radio service.
Our volunteer instructors are hams who believe that people can make a difference and they are willing to prove it by getting the word out, teaching license classes and service training sessions, and conducting exams. As they share their expertise, these guiding lights of our avocation community may never know of the public services they have stimulated, the positive attitudes they will have influenced, even the lives they may have saved. However, they do know the joy of serving others, the personal fulfillment, friendship, recognition, education and satisfaction in a job well done.
Our volunteers step outside of their daily routines to work in new and challenging environments. As they know, you can't really teach someone else without also teaching yourself. As we know, some people dream of worthy accomplishments, while others stay awake and do them.
Each of our volunteers is somebody who cares, somebody who devotes time without pay, somebody who builds a common bond with others to make things better. Our success in bringing new radio amateurs into the fold depends on the teamwork of these volunteer instructors all across the nation working together in pursuit of a common goal. Who among us would be an Amateur Radio operator today if it were not for the dedicated hams that took us under their wings and showed us how to fly?

Nominating forms are available on the ARRL Web site. Nominations must be received at ARRL HQ by March 1. All nominees will be invited to confirm their interest in competing for the award and to submit material documenting their activities.
All winners receive beautifully engraved plaques. The Lake County Amateur Radio Club (Crown Point, Indiana), is a long-time supporter of the Herb S. Brier Instructor of the Year award. For several years the Lambda Amateur Radio Club (Int'l), (Philadelphia, PA) has cosponsored the Professional Educator of the Year award. We have also had cosponsors from the Candlewood ARA, of CT, Central Michigan ARC, and the Carson Valley Radio Club of Minden, NV.
Plaque sponsorship is a perfect opportunity for your club members to help give recognition to instructors, recruiters and . . . your club! The process is simple. Your club contributes $80 (tax deductible) to the cost of the plaque, which is purchased by ARRL. The plaque is sent to the ARRL official who will present it to the winner, usually at a convention or hamfest. In turn, your club is honored by being named, along with nominees and winners, in QST and other ARRL publications. Of course, your club's name appears on the plaque as well.
